Learning Difficulties/ Disabilities

The Employability Skills for Adults with Learning Difficulties/Learning Disabilities curriculum combines employability skills training with

instruction in learner compensation strategies.  This unique combination provides a match between the learners’ learning strengths and weaknesses, instructional strategies, and employment goals.  Learners identify, practice, and demonstrate self-accommodation strategies they will use on the job to maximize the potential for successful employment.  The curriculum provides instructors with suggestions for individualized compensations, accommodations, and modifications that can be applied to all aspects of the learners’ lives.

Why This Model?

Due to the Workforce Investment Act’s focus on preparing adults for employment, programs are integrating employability skills instruction into their adult education classes. However, adults whose learning difficulties or learning disabilities (LD) present multiple barriers to finding and retaining employment need individualized, intensive approach in order to achieve employment success. The Employability Skills for Adults with Learning Difficulties/Learning Disabilities Model combines employability skills training with instruction in compensation strategies. Students learn strategies to use on the job that will maximize their strengths and help them compensate for weaker areas. For clients with diagnosed or suspected learning disabilities, learning how to use accommodation strategies is critical to achieving success on the job. The curriculum used in this model is unique in that it focuses on empowering learners through self-compensation and advocacy throughout the instructional process.

The Employability Skills for Adults with Learning Difficulties/Learning Disabilities Model was developed by the Adult Learning Resource Center as part of a collaborative venture between the Illinois State Board of Education, Community and Family Partnership Division and the Illinois Department of Human Services. The Employability Skills for Adults with Learning Difficulties/Learning Disabilities Model is a key element of Illinois’ statewide commitment to serve adults with suspected learning disabilities through education in employment readiness.
